New grant enables the grassroots organization to provide stipends to those committed to improving their community
DETROIT, Jan. 3, 2022 – State Rep. Cynthia A. Johnson (D-Detroit) and Phyllis Edwards, executive director of Bridging Communities, will detail a new initiative that will provide Detroiters with the tools they need for cleanup projects in the city during a press conference on Friday, Jan. 7, from 11-11:30 a.m., at Bridging Communities, 6900 McGraw Ave. in Detroit.
With the $250,000 awarded to the grassroots organization from the fiscal year 2022 state budget, Bridging Communities aims to launch new volunteer efforts by giving stipends to block clubs, organizations and individuals who sign up to clean and take care of the community.
“Detroiters have always been resilient and taken pride in looking after their neighborhood,” said Johnson, who fought for Bridging Communities to receive the funding in the budget. “Providing stipends to the people already committed to making sure. our city is clean-and safe is a forward-thinking approach that will ensure our community continues to thrive. Together, through this initiative, we can make Detroit an even better place to live.”
Bridging Communities is a grassroots organization dedicated to creating a stronger, more caring community and enhancing the quality of life for Detroiters. With this new initiative, the organization aims to strengthen its mission by providing resources to support neighborhoods for a lifetime.
“So many Detroiters want to help clean up our community but don’t have the tools or resources to do so,” Edwards said. “Thanks to this grant, Bridging Communities is now the hub for volunteers to get the funding they need to take care of our great city.”
