LANSING – The Michigan Legislative Black Caucus (MLBC) joins the legion of Michigan voters and citizens who are mourning Monday’s passing of former Michigan State Senator Morris “Mo” Hood III, a victim of COVID-19.
Sen Hood, a former member of both the Michigan House of Representative and Senate, also served as a Senate Minority Floor Leader, and was a state representative from 2003-2008. He served in the Senate from 2011-2018. Following his Senate terms, he worked for Wayne County government in state governmental relations. His father, former State Senator Morris Hood, Jr., was one of the founders of MLBC. Both Hoods were innate public servants. The senior Hood served in the Michigan House for more than two decades.

“Sen. Morris Hood III was a tremendous lawmaker,” Sen. Marshall Bullock II, MLBC chairman said. “He was known to lead with a quiet, yet firm, diplomacy.” Bullock added. “As a member of MLBC, he worked passionately on issues of racial equity, and always knew that to serve was about community rights, not just individuals. He let it be known that to work for the greater good was imperative because tomorrow is not promised. His temperament, dedication and spirit will truly be missed.”
Rep. Leslie Love, MLBC Executive Vice Chair, added, “My beloved friend and colleague, Sen. Hood, was a calming lighthouse in the midst of an often tumultuous political sea. We will miss – but always be benefitted by – his wisdom and counsel.”
