LANSING, Mich. (Nov. 22, 2022) — Michigan Legislative Black Caucus Chair Sen. Marshall Bullock (D-Detroit) and Vice Chair Sen. Erika Geiss (D-Taylor) issued the following statement regarding Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s appointment of Rep. Kyra Harris Bolden (D-Southfield) to the Michigan Supreme Court:

“As the great-granddaughter of a lynched Black man in America, Kyra Harris Bolden’s story is that of so many Black Michiganders and will undoubtedly give hope to the next generation of Black children that they, too, can accomplish whatever great things they set their minds to. The Michigan Legislative Black Caucus couldn’t be more proud to bear witness to this historic moment of the first Black woman on the state Supreme Court — a place where consequential decisions are made on a regular basis that can impact so many lives at once. We wholeheartedly support this selection and eagerly await to see what legacy Rep. Bolden will make for herself.

“We also want to thank Chief Justice Bridget Mary McCormack for her many years of service to the people of Michigan. She has undoubtedly had a lasting impact in the legal field and mentored so many young minds. We are grateful for her service.”
